Here's what it looked like to start with except you don't see the coiled cord hanging down.

The stock mirror just pulls off.

Remove the outer cover, you'll need it to cover what's in the next picture!

I kept the bracket to hold down the new one for the radar detector.

A bad picture. Sorry. But this is the smaller 8" windshield mount mirror from Kragen. Follow the directions to glue it on the windshield. My first batch of glue was bad and would NOT set up. The second batch worked fine. Do it in the sun as UV helps activate the compound. Warning: This mirror does vibrate more than the stock.

This is aluminum strap that I used to fabricate the bracket.

Cut the end to match the mount for your detector.

Spend a couple of minutes bending and testing the new mount in the car. mark the locations to be cut.

Check it.

Double check it.

I used my handy-dandy dremel tool to cut out the notches. Not I got in a hurry on the one and overheated the metal...oh well, it's gonna be black soon!

I did NOT want the catch to work because it's hard to reach the button when the detector is as high as I would like it. So I opened the case and you can see the high tech paper clip I used to hold the catch open.

Here it is held open. A friction fit is good, so make sure the bracket's "tang" is wide enough to have some friction or the detector will fall off when driving.

I used Goop to put some felt on and then bent the bracket up so that when it is in place it presses on the windshield. That way it doesn't "bounce." Oh yeah I sanded with 220 grit, used brake cleaner and sprayed with $3.99 Low Gloss Black.

Cut your cord and solder new leads. I used heat shrink. The one lead is SHORT since it is going to ground right at the bracket, but the hot lead will be long to go around the windshield.

Check out the ground wire. The hot lead goes up under the header cover. See the next pic.

You can get your finger under here and insert a screwdriver flat to hold the fascia open a bit.

This is a wider/better view of where I started.

I used a couple of screwdrivers, one to hold the gap open and one to push the wire. Three hands would have been nice.

The wire goes all the way around to the A-pillar.

At the base go back and down into the gap shown here. Mine has a AFratio wire and boost/vacuum line to fight with.

Pop off the two covers (pry gently at the REAR edge). Then you can work the wire down to the bottom and under the dash.

ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!! OWWWWWW! UGGGGHHHH!! Those are the nicer sounds you'll make working under the dash. Thank me for pointing out to you that the BLUE wire is the hot wire to the cigarette lighter. Tap into it for the 12V you need when the ACC is on.

HEY! That looks good to me! The black cover is hotglued on. Sign the guestbook okay?
