Miata Interior Light Kit. This kit is for Harry's '94, but would
work on a 90-93 as well. The kit is available for less than $30. |
There are only two screws at the bottom of the glove compartment. The whole thing just comes out. |
The blanks pop out easily. Try not to pry hard against any of the dash or center console...it CAN crack! |
The outer lens just pops out. Pry from below. |
Now the whole unit comes out. You can also reach behind through the hole left by the glove compartment. |
You'll have to unplug the connector. It's NOT just behind the lamp unit...dig further back to find it. See, Harry did all the finding work for you! |
Here's the unit! The red wire is is hot. The white wire grounds when the doors open. The black wire is a straight ground (for turning on the light manually). |
Ignore the white wire vampire tap Harry has in his hand. That's for
something else. The red wire from the kit is vampire tapped into the red wire in the harness (solder is better). |
First PROBLEM! The black wire from the kit must be attached under the phillips screw on the switch slider. That terminal is TOO big! We also noticed all the terminals were crimped loosely. Check them. |
Harry soldered on a smaller terminal to fit. |
It's pretty simple to screw it down. |
Bend the wire at a 90 degree angle so the switch will slide when it is installed. |
Here are the connectors for the new lamps. NOTICE ANY PROBLEMS!?! Problem #2! Yep, they crimped on a male instead of a female on one of the ends....poor quality control if you ask me! |
Feed a coathanger or other wire from the drivers side over to the passenger side. |
Pull the end connectors of one red and one black to the driver's side. |
Here are the connectors ready to plug in the new lamp unit. |
Looks darned good and gives off more light than even the OEM ones. |
Problem #3! The tabs on the lamp units are fragile. The rear one on this side snapped just pushing it in! We cleaned (CAREFULLY) with acetone and glued using Automotive Goop. All done! Works great! Harry has a happy, well lit, 94 red! |
