EZ-ON Cloth Top w/Glass & Defroster

[12/4/2007] Reviewed by: Ruben Saenz de Viteri

Tan cloth top with glass zippered window and defroster. Top installed by upholstery pro. Great look. Cloth seems to be high quality (made in USA added moral bonus). Inside has nice texture and appearance, and nice new top smell. Pricey install but great work. There are velcro tabs at the top corners of the window zipper that I guess are there to aid in one-handed "un-zip, top down" maneuvers, but I have yet to master it (plus the weather's cold and maybe it's smoother when warm). Fit & finish are fabulous with no sags, folds, or creases anywhere.

Initially loved the overall look. The top profile seems changed just slightly from the OEM vinyl, more of a forward-slanted, rounder, more taut look that's appealing. I'm intially disappointed in the zipper window use, but it may just be that I need to get used to it. There will certainly not be any more easy "red light, top down" opportunities of the OEM vinyl - I will miss that.

Satisfied, but a little disappointed in the functionality due to measurable loss of zoom-zoom factor. (I don't know if the orginal Mazda cloth tops were also zippered windows.)

EZ On Top w/Plastic Window

Replacement Top with Plastic Window The top looks very good and the top material looks to be high quality. However, warrenty is not backed by the company! The cloth ripped about 1/2 " above the zipper in the top middle after 2 years, 2 days of use. The 'use' consisted of about 30 times total of zipping the window closed. If I use the top it is without the window being zipped. The rip happened after I zipped the top and then latched the top to the front. When I went to the installer, he stated that it was up to the manufacturer (EZ Top). I emailed pictures of the issue and then had to call EZ Top for a response. No reply to the email. When I did contact them the repersentative stated it was obviously mis use and they would not correct the problem. I worked the problem (always having to contact the rep, since no return calls were returned) for a month, with no response including letters sent to the company.

Given the lifetime of the internal material versus the savings, I would recommend other manufactuers.

EZ-On Fabric Top w/ Glass Window

Fabric replacement top with glass window.

Replacement for the factory vinyl top on a 94. The black fabric looks better than vinyl and the glass is obviously a big improvement over plastic. I opted for a plain back window without the defroster wires. Top fit is very tight (was installed professionally). The top stack sits a little higher when folded, but the factory boot cover still fits over it.

The glass window is not quite as tall as the vinyl window. This does not affect the rear visibility through the mirror, but there is a wider stripe of top material visible below the window edge than the stock top. There are two short straps on the window flap that fasten to snaps on the rearmost top bow that help when zipping and unzipping the window. There is a little learning curve due to the weight of the window, but I found that starting the zipper and then holding the two halves of the zipper end firmly in one hand while pulling on the zipper pull with the other works and does not require an extra hand. Not sure if all EZ-on tops have the two straps to hold the window partially up when zipping / unzipping.

EZ ON Black vinyl Top with rear tinted glass

Out-Of-The-Box the top looked great,BUT the rear punch out holes did not line up,which made for wrinkles on both sides of the glass. My installer did a great job and EZ ON will send a replacement top,but unless they deem it to be a "top" problem, they won't help with the install labor. I'll let you know how this ends up when the final dust settles.Other than the wrinkles, the top looks good and doesn't leak.

Difficult to remove without leaving damage

EZ Top with glass window

I recently had an EZ Top replacement installed on my 1994 Miata. It has a glass rear window with zipper.

I find that the rear glass is very difficult to zip up after putting the top down. The zipper releases all the way and the glass is very heavy to hold in place while you allign the zipper for zipping the back window up. There must be an easier way than using an elbow and two fingers. It almost takes two people; one to hold the glass in place and one to start the zipper. I need suggestions from the manufacturer or somebody who knows the solution to this problem.
