Moss Miata

Hot stuff from 2003

Hot stuff from earlier years

In the nearly fifteen years that we've had Miatas, there have been quite a few books written on the subject. Mazda Miata MX-5 Performance Projects by Keith Tanner is a cut above the rest.

For starters, it covers in a very concise, easy-to-understand fashion, all of the most common maintenance and repairs for your Miata. From the simplest (Oil Change), to the more indimidating (Engine removal and installation), there are few things you would need to do that aren't covered in this 112 page guide. Each project builds on earlier ones, so individual chapters are short and to the point.

Then there are the upgrades...

How about installing a 1.8 liter engine in your 1.6 liter Miata? A little too much for you? OK, maybe you want to simply upgrade your header and exhaust. Or perhaps you want to affix racing stripes. Its all here.

The photography used to illustrate the projects is one of the book's strongest points. In addition, each project (there are 41) includes a time estimate, required tools, a 5-star "talent" assessment to give you an idea how difficult the job is (an oil change is 1 star, engine replacement is 4-star), a ballpark cost, and some of Tanner's wit.

While this book is probably not ideal for the inept beginner, it certainly belongs in the library of every Miata owning shadetree mechanic.

Miata owners choice of roll bars just got bigger. Boss Frog has introduced their new Clear View Roll Bar. Like their double hoop roll bar, the bar has also undergone a destructive test, per Sport Car Club of America (SCCA) specifications, that subjected the bar to load of 13 tons without the bar being any worse for wear. As the name implies the bar offers a "clear view" through the rear view mirror.

Factory shock absorber damping has been designed to meet general driving conditions. Vehicle Manufacturers using standard technology must conservatively tune the suspension to handle any situation encountered by the average driver. KW's suspension tuning philosophy aggressively increases the Low speed damping, which controls the pitch and roll and the overall handling of the vehicle. This eliminates the ‘sloppy’ feel associated with inferior suspension systems. High-speed damping is the suspensions ability to handle road issues such as pot holes and uneven pavement. KW only slightly increases the High-speed power of the damper. The overall effect is a greatly tightened suspension system, that will handle incredibly while providing the ride comfort that you desire. KW coil-overs feature all stainless steel bodies to insure quality and a long life span.

The PPF power kit from Moss Motors is an add-on to reinforce the factory PPF (Power Plant Frame) which is susceptible to bending and flexing. By further strengthening the PPF, movement and vibration is reduced in the drive train, especially in higher HP Miatas. This translates into a more stable platform for delivery of power to the rear wheels. The PPF power kit aids reducing the intensity of the ’65 MPH shimmy’. Fits manual transmission only.

A lowered 1990-97 Miata has very little suspension travel in the rear. This can lead to unsettled behaviour when cornering or on rough pavement as the suspension hits the bumpstops. Flyin' Miata has addressed this problem with their new upper shock mounts. The spring perch is in the same place so that ride height is unchanged, but the bumpstop and upper shock mounting position have been moved up by 20mm. This gives an extra 33mm (about 1.25") of travel for the rear. A high quality spherical bearing locates the shock shaft and bumpstops and shock boots are included. The result? A smoother ride and more predictable handling.

Not recommended for use in the front due to wheel/fender interference. $249.95/pair.

Tire smoking, tail happy oversteer may be fun but it's the slow way around. With a limited slip, your car hooks up early out of corners. Under acceleration, engine torque is delivered primarily to the right rear wheel. If this wheel is unloaded (as when turning right) the tire will spin. The left wheel, though heavily loaded, gets little power and the car will not accelerate until the right wheel regains traction. Even in a straight line, the right rear will break away first, limiting acceleration to the grip of only one tire. The limited slip differential ensures power is delivered to both rear wheels. Forced induction and modified engine owners absolutely require a limited slip differential to maximize the benefits of all that torque. Available for 90-93 Miatas.

The new alloy wheel from Japan, the Enkei RP-F1 is now in the U.S. at
Good-Win Racing.

15x7, 41mm offset, and amazingly light at just 9.8 pounds. Manufacturered using Rim Rolling Technology. This specialized process begins with a low pressure type of casting and uses a special machine that spins the initial casting, heats the outer portion of the casting and then uses steel rollers pressed against the rim area to pull the rim to its final width and shape. The combination of the heat, pressure and spinning create a rim area with the strength similar to a forged wheel without the high cost of the forging.

Some of the special wheels produced for the O.E.M. high performance or limited production vehicles utilize this type of technology resulting in a light and strong wheel at a reasonable cost. BBS has used this technology for several years in their production of racing wheels for Formula One and Indy cars.
