G 1990-92 MX-5 Miata Battery Handling for Vehicles in Storage

Description

When a Miata is not drive for a long time (e.g. when the vehicle is left in winter storage) the battery may discharge. This is due to the fact that a small amount of current is supplied to the Engine Control Unit, radio, etc. at all times. A storage procedure has been developed to keep the battery from discharging.

Storage Procedure

When the vehicle is stored for a long period of time (over one month) the following storage procedure should be followed.

  1. Remove the negative battery terminal or remove the "ROOM" fuse in the fuse box.
  2. When the vehicle is to be used after being left unused for a long time, replace the negative battery terminal or "ROOM" fuse (removed in step 1). Next, operate the engine for 30 minutes at relatively high engine speed to charge the battery.
