This product is designed to provide light into your trunk by activating the license plate lights when the trunk is opened (with the car, headlights and parking lights turned off). My car has remote entry and trunk release. This product is 100% compatible with this OEM feature.

Excellent installation instructions and photographs. The most difficult part for me was getting one of the wiring harnesses popped loose (the one fixed closest to the left rear fender on a support bracket). There was very little clearance for my hand, and the sheet metal I had to reach over had a very sharp edge. Also hard to remove was the trim around the glow-in-the-dark interior trunk release. A tab broke while I pulled this off. Everything else was very straight forward. Very "clean" installation (no hanging or exposed wires, etc).

The estimated installation time is about 30 minutes. It took me about one hour, but only because I was very deliberate and methodical (anal) about doing it correctly and cleanly. All parts fit together excellently and work as advertised. Be sure to pop a few ibuprofen before starting, as this will minimize back pain induced from being bent over into a trunk for an hour.

Light kit for trunk that uses the existing license plate lights without having to have headlights turned on.

Product works great, plenty on light now.

1 hour install. Great directions. Everything just like they said. The lights are actually outside the trunk (to shine on the rear license plate) so you know if they are going on and off like they are supposed to. Great product. I hope Mazda is taking good notes...

This is the new Team Miata license plate light to trunk light conversion kit. This kit attaches attaches a small switch to the trunk release mechanism and taps into the wiring harness to allow the license plate light (on the M2) to serve as a trunk light without having to have the headlights on. Part #TM-285A for the 2001 with keyless entry.

Installation was easy, taking about 30 minutes and the result is totally invisible. Instructions were step-by-step with pictures showing exactly how to do it. Everything needed is included (even small wire ties and connectors). Works great, now I can see to get things out of the trunk at night without having to leave the headlights on. Total cost with shipping to AZ was US $36.00.

This is one of those products that makes you wonder why Mazda didn't include in the car in the first place. I highly recommend it.

This kit is all that is necessary to allow the license plate lights on '99 + Miatas to provide additional use as trunk lights.

The instructions are impeccable! Excellent, sharp photos and extremely detailed instructions. I do not think that TEAM Miata missed a thing! (Far more professionally done than instructions included with the Moss interior light kit I just received today.) They suggest that the install time will be from 30 minutes to 1 hour, after reading the insructions thoroughly. Well, I am a 2 left thumbed mechanic and trying to comprehend the instructions was difficult. So, I chose to jump right in and study the instructions carefully as I proceeded. Well, a leasurely 2 hours later, the project was complete and everything was operating perfectly!

Anyone that has a '99 + Miata can see what the results will be by opening the trunk with the light turned on. I am very pleased with the results. Not only do the pair of license plate lights illuminate the opened trunk space, they scatter enough light behind the car to serve usefulness as a "yard lights". Quite a nice feature, actually. I would expect that the attachment location of the microswitch on the backside of the trunk latch (inside the trunk) will keep it very dry and contribute to long term service. I recommend this product highly. Bob Norton

This kit turns the license plate lights into trunk lights when the trunk lid is open by mounting a switch on the trunk latch and connecting it to the battery.

I'm not very good with tools so it took me about two hours to install. The directions were satisfactory and the little things left out were easy to figure out. The only holes required are on the trunk latch itself, using a template provided in the kit. The drill bit included snapped in drilling the first hole but that may have been my own fault. The connection at the battery is a ring connector that was supposed to go on the battery connection bolt but I could not get the nut off all the way so I cut the ring into a hook and slipped it on.

The light worked right off with no adjustments needed and does light up the trunk. It can be turned off by removing the fuse in the line or by removing the kit. I liked the fact that no holes had to be drilled in the body and it used a light already installed.
